A couple of weeks ago I received a request from a friend. She had seen some bunny ear egg cozies somewhere that she wanted to get but then, when the time came, she couldn't find them.
And so, always up for a challenge ;) I volunteered! At first, I thought that she wanted wool felt bunny ears, easy! But then, after further discussion, she actually meant felted wool bunny ears. You can see how that is a bit confusing...
I am by no means experienced at felting. I have done a bit here and there, and we did make our own felt balls for our acorn Christmas tree, but this was maybe a bit over my head. I used this tutorial for "How to make a felted stone" from Lil Fish Studios as a starting point.
First, I found some of our old plastic Easter eggs to use as a mold of sorts. I simply pulled apart a square of wool roving and then laid another square in the opposite direction on top of the first one. Next, I pressed the wool over the plastic egg and carefully dipped the top into a bit of hot soapy water. Once the wool was wet I gently rubbed and pushed and formed the wool onto the egg. After my egg "hat" was formed I left it on the egg to dry. For the ears I took a small amount of wool, got it wet and soapy, and carefully kneaded it into an ear form. Next, I snipped some pink ears and noses from wool felt and a bit of embroidery floss to use as whiskers. And now, the next step shows the felting novice in me...I hot glued the wool felt pieces onto the felted ears and cap to finish off my face and attached the ears to the cap with hot glue as well. I know I know that is probably not the proper way to do it, but then again, I was winging it!
