So, it seems that I like to join all of these great "bloggy" events at the last minute...Anyway, Skirt week is here
Or rather, it's been here, and now it's almost gone! Well, just in time, I made myself a new skirt!
A few weeks ago I picked up some slub linen while I was at Joann's. Of course, I hadn't planned on buying any linen, but when I saw it, I couldn't resist, the bonus was...I got a great deal on it! So, anyway, I bought some linen. While I was buying it I imagined some awesome pants for Henry or a dress for Violet, and then, changed my mind all together...a skirt for me!
With linen purchased, the next question was...how to make a skirt? Specifically, what skirt, what kind, what pattern? And then Crafterhours posted a tutorial for their milkmaid skirt, for Grown-up girls, it was kismet!
Yesterday I finally gave it a try. It came together very quickly and easily (my kind of project!). I followed the directions pretty much exactly, I did add a bit more ease to my skirt and added 6 inches (instead of 4) for the ease. I followed the suggestion of 5x7 for the pockets, although next time I think I will definitely make them a bit larger. I was hesitant to make them too large the first time because I was concerned that they might poof out a bit too much. But, there will be a next time...
I love the simplicity and flexibility of the neutral linen, but then, after seeing this post over at No Big Dill's Once Upon a Thread by This is Marzipan I had an itch to try some reverse applique for the first time.
So, I added some stars, just because I love stars!
As you can maybe tell, I was a little bit nervous about the whole applique thing, not sure how it was going to look, so I didn't go too crazy with the color, but I think it adds just the right amount of whimsy to the skirt, I like whimsy too!

Of course Violet wants a matching one now and she doesn't understand why I have cute fabric hiding inside my pockets. And Henry keeps walking around talking about my pretty big and little stars, so, I guess it's safe to say that they like it too ;)
That's okay too, because I think I could get used to this whole reverse applique thing. Once you get over the fact that you are cutting through the garment you just sewed, it's a ton of fun! I'm just not making them any promises, because, this making clothes for myself thing is kind of fun too.
