A couple of months ago I scored a bit of Aneela Hoey's Little Apples on sale from Rachael, who works at Sewn Studio. She generously offered to bring it along with her on her vacation and hand delivered it to me at our little bloggy meet up! Yay, thanks so much Rachael!
Anywho, I knew I wanted to make something autumnish with it but, at the time, I wasn't quite sure what. I decided an apple skirt.
I used this tutorial from Dana. The bottom layer is made of some super soft and thick red flannel. I thought the flannel layer would be perfect for those fall days where you don't really want to wear tights, but don't want cold little legs either!
While I was looking through Dana's skirt tutorials I fell in love with the little pocket on her market skirt and thought, hmmm, this skirt would look adorable with a little apple pocket. So I used more flannel for the pocket and a little bias tape for the leaves and stem. I used the pocket template that Dana provided, but simplified the pocket a bit by using a technique similar to that in the side pocket of the Treasure Pocket Pants. I folded over the top of the pocket to make a casing and then fed 1/4" elastic through, sewed it at one side and then pulled it the rest of the way through and sewed it at the other side. Simple as that. And then, as I was cutting my fabric I noticed the adorable "little apples" on the selvage. So I snipped it out and added it to my pocket!
As it turns out this skirt goes perfectly with an old apple tree appliqued shirt I made for Violet (TWO years ago and she's still wearing it!).
I love the way the skirt turned out!
Oh, and of course, the pocket!
Day two done!
