I am so very excited to be a part of the Sally Dress Pattern tour today! Shannon, of luvinthemommyhood and Very Shannon, has created such a sweet dress I was thrilled to have a chance to whip one up! The Sally Dress has such a beautiful vintage feel to it. There are no closures, just pop it over little heads. There are three sleeve options: sleeveless, short sleeved, or elbow length making it perfect for all seasons. Violet's dress has the elbow length, perfect for Fall. The bodice is fully lined and all of the seems are enclosed which makes for a very professional looking little dress both inside and out. And, of course, there are those fantastically large pockets... Pocket perfects for whatever little hands could desire, artwork, pine cones, stuffed animal pals...
Along with those fabulous pockets, perhaps my favorite part of the dress, the square neckline... I just love a square neckline, so so sweet and classic! Shannon's dress pattern is very well written with LOTS of diagrams. I love lots of visual references in a pattern.
I sewed up a size 4T for Violet (despite the fact that I usually make 5T) because her chest measurements measured 4T and since the bodice is semi-fitted it is recommended you make the dress according to the chest size. Of course, I neglected to take into consideration the length! Oops! It's a bit short. And, perhaps, to extend the wearing life of the dress I should have made the size 5T after all, but I just love it this length and the fit of the bodice! Besides, a dress a little too short?...No worries, when you've got a pair of ruffled Fancy Pants to go underneath right? And really a too short dress in the Fall just means it's perfect for wearing with leggings, right? Violet and I have already discussed the possibility of adding a strip of the Essex linen to the bottom come Spring when it will surely be too short.
Speaking of fabric choices and Violet...I've learned, now with a little girl who knows what she likes, to sit down together to pick out fabrics when I am planning to sew something up for her. I usually show her the pattern, then we discuss, and then we browse...She picked out the fabrics, well the ones you can see... Sarah Watts, Timber & Leaf Fox portrait, and Essex Linen Indigo. I chose the linings to coordinate, the bodice lining is teal organic Robert Kaufman and the pocket lining is more Eric & Julie Comstock S'more Love (leftover from Violet's backpack) all from Fabricworm. And then, of course, I added a little bit of teal piping... Sorry, I don't have any pictures as to how I did this...But, I basted the piping along the top of the skirt before attaching my bodice to the skirt. Then, when it was time to attach the outside of the bodice I simply lined up my folded outer bodice edge with my piping and sewed along, very close, to the piping and edge of the bodice with my zipper foot to attach the outer bodice. I really do love that little added touch of piping.
And, my little walk in the woods loving, not too girly girl loves it too... In fact, it's our new favorite dress! Perfect for twirling... Fairy searching... Daydreaming... And camouflaged walks in the woods... Such a beautiful pattern perfect for adding your own little touches!
Henry loves the dress too...it's the foxes! Yeah, and a photo shoot...he's always got to be in on a photo shoot, cue the Henry photo bomb collage... Maybe I'll make him something with the rest of the foxes.
