I've been swimsuit sewing again!
I did a few things different with this suit. First, I made view D and while I do love those side ruffles, this skirt totally gets me! The skirt is just so cute bouncing about!
I also used foldover elastic (FOE) for the legs instead of swimsuit elastic. Helena had mentioned that she might do as such in the pattern testing group and it seemed like a good idea so I tucked it away in my head. With this fabric I really didn't want to take anything away from the amazing print but I thought that the contrast of color on the legs would look cute.
For the FOE, I simply started at the back and carefully pinned it all the way around the leg opening, overlapping the ends and sewed it on with a zig zag stitch. Doing it this way actually made the leg opening a bit looser for Violet than her initial suit which is good. I love the contrast of color, plus FOE makes the leg opening super soft!
I added a bit of red FOE across the top of the suit as well for a pop of color. And, after seeing Suz's amazing fancy Cosi I fell in love with the swimsuit binding along the top so I gave it a try myself...
I am happy with the way it looks and that it turned out well...but, I will say, that making binding and then sewing binding with swimsuit fabric is NOT for the faint of heart! It doesn't stay folded, it takes a thousand pins, it took forever! And, I don't think I stretched it quite enough because it could be a little tighter around the back, but really that doesn't bother me because hopefully that just means that we will get lots of use out of this suit.
I am loving this pattern and excited that the sizing goes up to 10 years! I will likely be sewing a couple of these up each summer for as long as I can! And, with seven different options to choose from, not to mention other add ons that can be made like ruffles along the top and colorblocking no two suits need be the same!
I made this suit just before we headed off on a mini getaway to visit my sister who lives near the beach and this fish fabric turned out to be perfect for a Fourth of July trip to the beach!
I had had my eye on these retro fish ever since Girl Charlee showed a sneak peak of it on instagram two months ago, but really I had NO idea that I'd ever be able to make something with it! This fabric is such great quality, thick and strong, but has great stretch and is soft too!
Although, now, after looking at pictures of it over and over again, I'm thinking that perhaps the fish are upside down on the suit itself...and darn it, the fish on the skirt are swimming in the opposite direction as the ones in the body!
Anyway, it's a darn cute suit regardless! Plus, it looks great with last years bucket hat.
And, really, the most important thing, she totally loves it!
Since we were heading to my sister's I thought why not make two little fish suits, one for Violet's cousin too! They loved matching last year in their nightgowns and so this year they got to match in their swimsuits!
