It's that time again! Time to take off your pants! Well, and don dresses and skirts (no I'm not suggesting that you walk around in just your under garments!).
Welcome to SONP (summer of no pants) 2014!
What is SONP? Well, you can get all you need to know here, but really it's a challenge, a challenge to skip the pants (or shorts) and opt for the more free flowing choice of dresses and skirts. I personally would much rather wear skirts or dresses in the summer anyway, they are so much cooler than the alternative, right?
In years past SONP has been all about wearing and sewing your "no pants", but this year the sewing part is optional. This year it's simply about "celebrating femininity, personal style, and the handmade life."
So, really, why not join in the fun, right?
Whether you are joining SONP with handmades or store bought it's always fun to make something "your own" by adding your own little touch. So, taking that into consideration I've got a fantastic roundup of tutorials and examples of fun ways to embellish your skirts and dresses to give them that little extra "me" style!
If reverse applique isn't your thing, but you'd like to add just a bit of something to your skirts or dresses why not add an applique. Appliques can be super simple and also super fancy depending on how involved and detailed you want to get. Plus, if you use Heat'n Bond Ultra you can skip the sewing!
If applique is nice but not quite enough "bling" for you then you could try adding sequins or beads to your skirt to add just a bit of shine...
Adding lace can give a plain skirt or dress a beautiful vintage feel...
If you've got the time and are willing to do a little handwork, adding embroidery to a dress or skirt can add a beautiful, handmade and unique touch to your "no pants"...
clockwise from top left: try adding rainbow trim, tiny flowers, or a large colorful embroidered section. Kate & Rose have several beautiful embroidery patterns that are perfect for adding onto dresses and skirts (plus "no pants" patterns too!)
Adding a simple little ruffle around the bottom of a skirt or dress can add the perfect amount of feminity...
Don't forget ribbon! There are loads and loads of different types of ribbons, piping, cording, etc out there. Add them onto to your clothes and change the whole look...
And, if you are in the mood to sew your own skirt start with embellished fabric and it's a breeze! Let the fabric do the "work" for you!
So many options so little skirts in my closet! I'm ready to scour my closet for some skirts to embellish, or the thrift store or the sales racks! (Or maybe I'll just make some.) I really want to try a stenciled skirt. The slip extenders are fantastic too!
What about you, where would you start?
Have a great day!
