The next round of Kids Clothes Week is quickly approaching and while I'm not quite certain what I'll be making just yet, or, in fact, how much I'll be participating, I really really love this season's theme...Upcycling!
I love to upcycle things into clothes for Violet and Henry! In fact, when I first started to sew clothes for them much of the fabric I used to make their clothes came from clothes my husband was discarding from his own closet!
Why to upcycle?
Save money... In the beginning I was a newbie and didn't have much confidence in my sewing abilities, therefore I wasn't quite interested in spending loads of money on fabric that I could potentially screw up!
Upcycling is recycling... If you are upcycling clothes that means you are also doing something good for the environment, right?
Saves time... I love to use old clothes to upcycle into new ones because it often means time saved on hems and button holes, all those little "annoying" things that take up time at the end of a project.
Stretch your creativity... While upcycling can make things easier, it is can also be challenging to figure out how exactly to get what you want out of what you have. The challenge and puzzle makes it fun!
It's super cute!...Lastly, and maybe most importantly the end results are often the cutest! While clothes may have seen their last legs as "adult clothing" they get a new and youthful life on tiny bodies! Their isn't much that's cuter than seeing your child walking around in something that you or your husband used to wear. That is the best!
Need some upcycling inspiration? I've rounded up some of my past upcycled projects (which, I think, might outnumber my non-upcycled projects!)
linen shorts, tractor fancy pants, sweatshirt fancy pants, cargo shorts, denim treasure pocket pants, denim star treasure pocket pants, corduroy treasure pocket pants, tee shirt fancy pants, snow white treasure pocket pants, towel prefontaine shorts, corduroy hosh pants, voile skirt, tee shirt prefontaine shorts.
So, what do you think? Are you planning on sewing for Kids Clothes Week? Will you be sewing along with the theme? I've casually deemed February sewing for me month, but I think I'll have to make something for the kids!
