Today is the Valentine party at Violet's school. I always think having a simple craft is nice to have as part of the "fun" for the party. But, it has to be simple. There can't be too many steps, or long drying times.
Recently inspired by this thaumatrope I thought that a thaumatrope seemed like a fun craft project to make and designed my own...
What is a thaumatrope you may ask? A thaumatrope is an "old-fashioned" toy that was popular in the 19th century. It is a disk that has a picture on each side and when it is moved quickly back and forth either by string or a stick the two pictures appear to blend into one.
Want to make one of your own? You'll need to download the animal cutout template and the heart cutout templates. You will also need a stick, I used a bamboo skewer (with the pointed tip snipped off) but you could also use a straw or something similar. Additionally you need glue and scissors.
Cut out your shapes. Generously spread glue onto the backs of both, spread glue onto the stick as well to ensure that it stays put. Sandwich the stick between the two sides. And that's it! Now you have a fun little thaumatrope to play with in awe...
The kids really got a kick out of these and to be honest, so did I! They are super simple to make. You can even download blank cutouts if you'd like and make your own cute thing or add a photo that you want to have show up inside the heart!
So much fun!
Happy Valentine's Day, enjoy!
