Hi there!! If you are stopping by via Pinterest or from another link, thanks so much for coming! And, while you're at it, take a look around...there's lots of fun stuff to see!
These little bunnies were inspired by my larger wool bunny rabbits, and of course, Easter! These little guys are all sewn by hand. The supply list and finished product are both small, making them a perfect take along project. I myself, made some sitting outside under the umbrella with the Spring breeze and some on the couch during March Madness basketball watching hours!
Supplies:
Felt
Embroidery needle
Embroidery floss (in a coordinating color to the felt and some for eyes and nose)
Yarn
Scissors
Stuffing
To make:
Using the template provided here, cut out two bunny rabbit shapes and one bottom piece (oval) out of felt.
Next cut about five inches of yarn and fold the yarn to make three loops.
Pin the looped yarn onto the tail area of one of the bunny rabbits.
Place the two bunny rabbit felt pieces wrong sides together with the tail sandwiched in between and, beginning at the hind legs, sew the two pieces together using a blanket stitch. (Future Girl has a great tutorial for sewing felt together using a blanket stitch with lots of great pictures that you can use as a reference!)
***Note: if you simply stop right here, you have a pretty cute little bunny finger puppet!***
After your two bunny pieces have been sewn together take a small amount of stuffing and stuff it up into the ear and head of the bunny. Next, thread your needle with embroidery floss for the bunny eyes, knot the end of your thread, push your needle up through the bunny from the inside and then out, make a french knot for one eye, push your needle back through to the other side, make another french knot for the second eye, push your needle back inside the bunny and snip off the thread (the tail of your thread stays nicely hidden inside the bunny!). Now, thread your needle with embroidery floss for the bunny nose, again knot the end and bring your needle up from the inside of the bunny and push your needle out near the nose. Satin stitch the nose and push the thread back inside to hide the end of your thread and snip off the excess.
Now that you have the bunny's face complete stuff your little rabbit the rest of the way, enough to fill it out. Next, with the right side of the bottom piece of felt facing out, line up the front of the bunny with the front part of the bottom piece and sew the bottom of the bunny onto the bunny using the blanket stitch again.
Tie off your thread, push it into and then out of your bunny, pull the needle tight a bit and snip the thread (the tail should pop right back inside your bunny). And, ta da! You have your bunny!
Once Henry saw these little guys he really did not want to let them go! It was all I could do to have them for a moment to take their pictures! They are soft, small and squishy enough for little hands to carry many, because, after all...isn't that what little hands are always trying to do...carry many many little things all at once!
Or, maybe, shove them in their pockets!
Here we were singing:
"See the sleeping bunnies, sleeping till it's noon
Shall we wake them with a merry tune
Oh so still, are they ill?
Shhhh....
Wake up wake up, wake up sleeping bunnies!
Wake up wake up, wake up sleeping bunnies!
Hop little bunnies, hop, hop, hop
Stop little bunnies, stop, stop, stop."
Now, to see if I can sneak them away so I can put them in their Easter baskets later! Enjoy!
