When I was preparing for my kid crafting at the Gala Artisan Jewelry & Gifts craft show I thought it would be fun to add a little pom pom flower flair to the supplies table, you know, to add a bit of color...
Pom poms are so simple to make, although they can be a bit time consuming and messy.
Anywho, simply wrap yarn around three fingers many, many times, tie a piece of yarn around the middle of your loops of yarn, snip the loops on each end and then snip off the ends to make the pom pom. The snipping is the messy part and you end up with lots and lots of little yarn remnants. I snipped mine over a trash can so all those little bits fell right into the trash. Once the pom poms were made I added a dab of hot glue to the pointy side of a bamboo skewer and poked it through the center of the pom pom.
And there you have it, a bouquet of pom poms...
Alright, alright, yes, I know pom pom flowers are floating around a lot of places lately...but they are so much fun! Violet and Henry pretend they are magic fairy wands, plus it's nice to have some on hand to share them with friends who visit.
After the big flower pom poms we began to make tiny pom poms (only two fingers) and poked a bobby pin through the center for fun hair accessories...
So now we have mini pom poms and medium flower pom poms in our house...And then the Allium popped open!
Nature's purple pom poms!
Allium are relatively new to me.
When we moved into our home three years ago Violet and I grabbed a bunch of bulbs at the hardware store barely paying attention to what we were buying and just started digging and plopping bulbs into the ground.
The following Spring these giant purple flowers popped out of the ground! My neighbor asked me what they were and I laughed and told her I had no idea! I had planted them in the midst of a sleep deprived haze, as Henry was still an infant at the time, and I had no idea what we had planted. Finally, after a lot of internet searching between my mom and I, we realized that they were allium.
Ever since that Spring we eagerly await the allium!
And so, with all of this pom pom making, why not make some big purple pom poms, right...
For the giant allium pom poms I wrapped the yarn looslely around my entire hand. Once the pom pom was made I added some hot glue to the end of a long stick for it's stem.
It tickled her nose...
But, we didn't stop just there...We made a purple pipe cleaner Allium too! (Try to say that three times fast!)
The "pom pom" is made from several purple pipe cleaners twisted together in the center, then their ends are folded in and twisted around themselves
The stem is a bamboo skewer poked into the center of the purple pom pom and then wrapped in green pipe cleaners. I made a magic wand for "Abby Cadabby" in a very similar way a couple of years ago and like that one, this one seems to be perfect for spell casting...
And so we have mini, medium, big, and pokey pom poms.
I bet you can't tell which flower is the pom pom and which one is the real deal...
Alright, I was just kidding, of course you can, but still, they are pretty close...
That's probably enough pom poms for today...
Have a great one!
