Remember last week when I said that I wasn't participating in KCW for the first ever summer sewing?
Well, okay, so right before I said that Kristin posted a nightgown tutorial for Delia and Kristin's Color Your Summer Series...and I fell in love with it!
On top of that...my sister and her family came to visit us. She has a son and a daughter...her daughter is the kid's only girl cousin on either side of our family, and she happens to be exactly one year and one day older than Violet.
So, the thing is...I had to make them matching princessy night gowns! Of course!
I used Kristin's tutorial but I panicked a bit while making the top part and worried that it might be too small, so I stitched up the top with a 1/4" seam allowance instead of the 1/2" she suggests. This made the top front corners pop up a little too much so I folded the front corners inside from the edge of the strap to the armpit curve and stitched them down...
The straps are about 12" long. The back gaped a little bit, so I added a bit of elastic thread runching...
It still gaps a bit...perhaps I should have the runching section a bit longer...
But the girls didn't seem to mind a bit, so that's good.
I didn't have any vintage sheets like Kristin did, but instead had some super soft knit on hand that I bought from Girl Charlee. I also only had one yard of it. So, since it's super wide, and knit, I just flipped it so the stripes were vertical and stitched up the cut edges (as opposed to selvedge to selvedge), cut my yard in half and then I had two skirts.
I trimmed the skirts up to just the right length at the very end.
The tops are made of Robert Kauffman Essex linen, Denim. Each girl got their initials embroidered on the front...
The nightgowns turned out beautifully. They are so elegant (as my husband proclaimed...).
The girls agreed that they are princess-like! And, of course both were crazy excited to have matching nightgowns!
And, since they are made out of super soft knit, that are so very comfy!
I'm jealous! My 22 year old sister (who is living with us for the summer) is jealous!
So, I guess I lied...well, it's not that I really lied, it's just that I couldn't stay away! So, here are my two, and only two KCW summer projects!
Have you been sewing? What have you been sewing? Let me know!
Have a great day!
