I was thrilled when Celina, of Petit a Petit & Family, and Hayley, of Welcome to the Mouse House, asked me to be a part of their Shades of Me Sewing Series!
And then, when I got the color purple...I was even more excited! Truthfully, my favorite color is green, and that color would have been totally awesome too! But, being a February baby I do have a special place in my heart for purple too...
If you didn't know, February's birth flower is the Violet, and it's birthstone is the amethyst...so purple must be in my blood, right?
In fact, Violet, being a February baby too, got her name for that very reason (and New Jersey's state flower, which is where we lived when she was born, is also the Violet..).
So, yeah, I kind of totally love purple too!
Now that I've professed my love of purple...ha! Back to Shades of Me...The point of this sewing series is to encourage woman to sew for themselves, and then with the added fun of sewing up and putting together a monochromatic look with your color.
It took me a long time to decide exactly what I was going to make. Initially I had planned to finally sew up a Laurel for myself using some fabulous eggplant colored double gauze...But then I really wanted to do more of an monochromatic look instead of simply a dress. So I changed my mind and made three different pieces, a shirt, skirt and scarf...
And I am totally in love with them all! From top to bottom:
The scarf...an infinity scarf. I used one yard of this beautiful mini flower double gauze from Imagine Gnats and it is so amazing! I used Rachael's tutorial, but my fabric dimensions ended up being a little different...I simply cut my yard in half (two half yards) to make two pieces ~18"x43" and sewed those two together, so it is extra long.
The shirt...the Plantain which is the new (FREE!) pattern from Deer & Doe. I used a thick and soft knit from Jo-ann. It's the same knit I used for Violet's meridian, and of course I didn't have enough so I had to get some more...
In place of the called for oval elbow patches, I added hearts...
Because hearts and purple and Valentine's Day go together so very well!
I love this shirt so much! It's comfortable and flattering and has a beautiful professional look when it's finished! I think I must make myself some more.
The skirt...Mini Skirt 08/2012 from Burdastyle. The skirt was really my starting point thanks to some beautiful wool I got from Kelley's IG destash sale! Once I saw it I knew I had to make myself a skirt!
It's fully lined, has an invisible zipper and fits perfectly! Plus, even it's facing is purple!
While I do love the ease of a dress, it's nice to have seperates too, to mix and match...or to wear all together!
Tights... Target
Boots...Hunter (a birthday gift from my hubby!) They are purple too (although it's hard to tell)!
Bracelet... made by me.(PS, the glasses are purple too...which is why they came along!)
Thank you so much Hayley and Celina for giving me an reason excuse to sew for myself! It was so much fun!
Don't forget to check out the rest of the series...
