Selfish Sewing Week, Lane Raglan...

It's Selfish Sewing Week!  It's time to put aside those "other" projects and pick up all those that you've been pushing aside for yourself!

My first project this week, a Lane Raglan tee by Hey June.

I was so excited to get a chance to sew up this raglan.  I've had my eye on it since it came out and...I knew just the fabric I wanted to use to make it!   You might remember me saying something like:

"I am so in love with the mix of tomboy and girly girl in this shirt, I'm really thinking about making one of my own!"

When I made Violet her floral raglan for "What would Celina do?"

Well, it just so happens that I had enough floral knit to actually do just that! 

I didn't have enough of the tiny green stripes to make it exactly the same, I used the same neon green stripe I used for the kid's bunny raglans instead.

I wasn't so sure I wanted a long sleeved shirt, but also didn't realize that until after I had the sleeves sewn, so I simply rolled them up to where I wanted them to be and added a little knit band to hold them rolled up in place all the time...

And, I love the rolled sleeve addition! 

This floral knit is simply the most comfortable knit ever! 
I made the shirt according to my measurements and made the XL, which, while it is comfortable, it feels way too big to me, just too loose all around, and because I'm short, too long...

This is not to say I won't (and haven't) wear it, just to say that the next time I'll try a smaller size...

In fact, I wore it yesterday.  And, unbeknownst to me, Violet had the same plan...I came upstairs to check on everyone as they were getting to school and found that we were wearing the same shirt!  We giggled and got a kick out of it! 
And Henry took our picture!  Thus, the lack of heads!  He was so excited to be allowed to use the camera!  Violet took the other pictures.

Fashion Revolution...

Uh oh!  We accidentally put our clothes on inside out today! 

Nope, we did it on purpose actually! 

Today is Fashion Revolution's #insideout day!  And, thanks to Laura, Celina and Abby it's also #handmadeinsideout day for those of us who make our own clothes.  In their words:

            "The goal is for all of us to stand together for a united cause and help to show sewing             (in all its forms) as an ethical and sustainable alternative to fast fashion and mass             consumerism.  It’s one piece in a very large puzzle but by showcasing home sewn             items we will help spread the word that in some cases the answer to ‘Who Made Your             Clothes?’ can proudly be answered, “ME!”

I'm sure you remember the awful Rana Plaza factory complex collapse last year in which over 1,000 people were killed and over 2500 were injured.  Watching the news coverage of that event was devastating and so difficult to see and think about!  And, today, Fashion Revolution Day says enough is enough!  It's goal is to "help to raise awareness of the true cost of fashion, show the world that change is possible, and celebrate all those involved in creating a more sustainable future".

How can you get involved?  Be curious, find out, and do something!

While I can't say that we wear exclusively handmade items, there certainly are a lot!  And, I can say that while trolling the aisles of Target I do flip those tags over and see where things are made...it makes me think...and often times it makes me think that I can/should just make it myself... Of course, making your own clothes takes only one question out of the equation..."Who made your clothes?"  It doesn't take into consideration "who made your fabric?"  which in many cases is being made in similar conditions as clothes, but it is a small step, every little step counts, right?

Kid Craft, Easter Egg Maracas...

Here's a simple and fun Eastery project...

These Easter Egg Maracas were one of the crafty activities that I had planned for our neighborhood egg hunt and they turned out to be a big hit!  Plus, you've probably already got the supplies in your house!

Supplies:  plastic eggs (I think the larger ones work better),  dried lentils, beans or rice & washi tape.

1) Spoon lentils and beans into your plastic eggs...

2) Close up the egg and tape around the center...

3) Add more tape around the egg if desired to decorate it more...

4) And then shake, shake, shake...
