Last weekend my husband's cousin got married. It was a beautiful day for a wedding along the water's edge. The bride and groom did such a lovely job putting together a wedding that had so many perfectly "them" special touches.
The kids were extra excited because this was only the second wedding that they had been invited to and they couldn't wait to don some "fancy" clothes and see what all the wedding "fuss" was about...plus it meant that they got to stay in a hotel!
I have been trying really hard to curtail my fabric and pattern buying. After a massive clean up and out of fabric and too small patterns over the summer I'm now planning to work on dwindling my fabric stash and use those not yet made patterns first, but sometimes...a special occasion calls for new fabric and patterns, right...
So, the story goes...I bought the blue striped Cotton & Steel for myself, but didn't know what I planned to make with it, I had always intended on using the Loominous for Henry, but not necessarily in this fashion, and Violet requested something "organey" for dress when I headed off to Joann by myself one day...
She's not so much into florals these days as it turns out and the only "organey" fabric I found was this beautiful (I think!) Juliana Horner rosette fabric...
She instead was drawn to the Cotton and Steel, Gust in Cobalt that I had wanted (for something)...
Well, since she was taking "my" Cotton & Steel, all that I had left with enough yardage for me was those orangey florals...
As it turns out...she was right, I was wrong. Those roses were never meant for her nor were those paint brushed navy stripes meant for me. Whether she knew it all along or not, she picked the perfect fabrics for us both.
The dresses themselves...Violet is wearing Dana's first day dress which was totally perfect for a little twirly wedding dancing...because hey what's a wedding without a little boogieing ...
It's fully lined with a pale pink cotton peaking out underneath to match the touch of pink of the piping at the waist. There is a sweet little pink rose button on the back too (I snuck a rose in there afterall!) to tie the pink all together, but alas no picture of the back.
My dress...I looked hi and low and asked for advice and changed my mind over and over again before deciding what exactly to make. Part of my decision changed when my fabric choice changed. In the end I decided on the Gathered Sundress from Pattern Runway. I actually used the free version from Peppermint Mag's Sewing School. I'm not sure what the differences between the two are except that the free pattern has it's zip at the side whereas the purchased one is in the back. I chose this dress because I loved it's classic style, but with a bit of a modern twist with the curved pockets. The pockets, seriously...they sold me on the dress, well the pockets and the fact that my fabric and this pattern just seemed like the perfect match for each other.
Initially I made a quick muslin using the size 38, but that was much too big for me, so I cut the 36 instead. I made most of the dress in one day...leaving the last little bit till I had finished the kid's things...The last little bit, as you know, ends up being the zipper and the hem...which I was finishing up an hour before we had to head out for the wedding! Dumb! Such a dumb move on my part because after putting the zipper in I realized that the dress was still too big up top! I quickly resolved it but sewing an additional 1/4" along the two back seams and along the top of the straps which worked, perfectly in fact, but the inside of the dress does not look so pretty.
Anywho, I love this dress! I will probably be making another for next summer, but for now I look forward to wearing this one with tights and boots and a cardi, the colors are perfectly autumnal as well. Oh, and to add a little extra poof to the dress I totally made myself a mini "tutu" slip from some extra tulle I had sitting around.
Last, but not least, for our little "photo bomber"...
A sailboat top in Anna Maria Horner Loominous, another pattern/fabric match made in heaven...
Also another morning of the wedding make...I was about to give up on trying to make Henry something, but then thought I'd just squeeze it in...which, since I already had the fabric cut I was able to manage.
This top is actually a pretty quick sew about an hour I'd say, and the style is perfectly "Henry", I can't believe I haven't sewn one before...
oh there will be more though...
I'm so glad that I did just squeeze his shirt into the morning of...because what could be better than a sailboat top at a "nautical themed" wedding along the water?
Plus, these two matched each other perfectly...
In fact, for the first time, perhaps ever, we were a color coordinated family. Of course, we were rushed and didn't really get any "perfect" pictures of us...
But, it's a family photo none the less. And really, it wasn't about the picture, it was about us all being together and celebrating the bride and groom. Oh and dancing and laughing and having a grand old time! It's nice going to a wedding unencumbered by children...but having them there with you is super fun too! Man I wish you could have seen their dance moves, stellar!
Happy Day to you!
